Lambda Alpha International, the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics, was founded in 1930 under the leadership of the renowned land economist and champion of academic freedom, Richard T. Ely. As an honorary society, it provides a forum for the study and advancement of land economics where the “winnowing and sifting” of ideas takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

- summer field trips allowing first-hand experiences of Chicago-land locations of interest to members;

- frequent opportunities for networking.
Membership in the Chicago Region Chapter, as is with all Lambda Alpha International Chapters, is by invitation only. Current members in good standing nominate individuals who have extensive experience (at least 10 years) in the fields of land economics, architecture, engineering, real estate, planning, government, academia, real estate, land use and zoning law, etc. Additionally, to be accepted into Chicago Region Chapter membership individuals must have a demonstrated commitment to community through public service contributions.
The Membership Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors reviews and recommends a slate of new members who are sworn in at the annual initiation banquet.
